Flu or influenza is an infectious disease caused by a virus and experienced not only by  human beings but also by birds and other mammals. You must have heard of swine flu, H1N1 flu and bird flu.

When flu virus infect people especially little children and elderly, this contagious respiratory illness can lead to mild to severe illness, hospitalization and even death. As a highly contagious disease, it can infect people about 6 feet away when the flu virus travels airborne.


The condition is viral and spreads seasonally in many places around the world and is transmitted by air through coughs and sneezes.

You can also get infected when directly coming contact with nasal secretions or bird droppings and through contact with contaminated surfaces.

Signs and Symptoms

The most common symptoms are fever, sore throat, chills, headache which is often severe, muscle pains, cough, a feeling of being weak or fatigued and general discomfort. The disease can lead to pneumonia even if you are healthy.

Natural treatment and remedies

The sick feeling can easily be gone when getting enough fluids. A sign that you are getting the right amount of water into your body is that your urine may seem colorless.

Herbal tea with honey can soothe your sore throat aside from providing your body with the the water content it needs.

Avoid alcohol though.

Sipping soup especially chicken soup will be better to relieve symptoms of infections in you upper respiratory tract. The vapor from the soup can also make you feel better.

Spending a lot of time in bed and getting a day or two off some daily responsibilities will also help in your speedy recovery since rest is one way of providing your body with the ability to fight infection. Rest helps the immune system to work well. Breathing moist air can also help in easing nasal congestion and pain from sore throat. You can do this by taking a steam shower or using a humidifier.

A warm compress and nasal irrigation can help in relieving sinus pain or headache.
